Anyone who’s ever taken a dive in the dating pool knows that the splashdown can be rough. And online dating can make a hard task even worse.
Comedian Nicole Byer knows this better than most. She’s on five dating apps and has had manifestly terrible luck on all of them. (This might be one reason.) So she started a podcast to figure out why.
In her show, Why Won’t You Date Me?, Byer digs into the dating scene with friends and fellow comedians and lays bare her struggles to find the right person. In the process, she discovers some important things about herself — she can be unknowable and intimidating and a little emotionally stunted.
But then Byer is a particularly ribald lady comedian with an outrageous point of view. That, coupled with her frankness, is part of what makes her comedy so great. So it makes sense that she isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Still, she would like to find love. Or at least some sexy times. Why Won’t You Date Me? is a refreshing and honest examination of the pitfalls of dating and how to navigate them.
(Also, if you haven’t seen Byer’s video about auditioning for acting roles as a black woman, drop everything and watch it now.)
